As understood about polynesian-introduced/indigneous woods, kamani (Calophyllum inophyllum L.) and milo (Thespesia populnea L.) do not impart undesireable odors or tastes to food. As such these were often used in making food or drink containers.
The Executive Chef in Honolulu sells kamani wood cups at $2.75 each. The name brand is (by) "no ka oi". Apparently they're cheap because they're made in the Philippines. The cups have a flat bottom so they won't tilt over.
Thanks to Skip Bittenbender for introducing these cups at one of our committee meetings while planning for the Hawai'i Pacific Islands Kava Festival.
Mahalo,
Jonathan
