Maybe I'm vain, but I thought I had to include that last one for perspective on height & proportion.[:)] I look like a dork! Maybe I am. [:D] This specimen of Hawaiian kava or 'awa is known as 'apu. It is approximately two years of age. I first distinguish it from a nearby kumukua, another green variety, by its medium length internodes. The kumukua has longer internodes. I don't know whether the semantics is affecting my judgement, but the top leaves do look like they're cups. And it seemed that this is true with respect to the other Hawaiian varieties at our Kahalu'u nursery. According to my understanding of Vincent Lebot, Ed Johnston, et al., and their paper in Economic Botany (put citation here), the 'apu and mahakea have unique DNAs. Whereas the rest are identical. Morphologically though they can be different. So how is DNA significant here? That's a question. [:)]
