Research news: Kava as an anti-craving agent?
yee FYI. Here's an e-mail (forwarded via Skip) Greg Steiner, Fri 1/3/2003 9:57 AM Aloha 'awa leaders and kava scientists, Just in from Greg Steiner <ggsteiner@yahoo.com> an independent scientist formerly in Honolulu. Greg published on the negative correlation between per capita kava consumption and cancer rates in the Hawaii Medical Journal a couple years ago his other interest is treatment of substance abuse. "It seems you need some good news about kava. As you know I have an interest in kava as an anticraving agent for treating addictions. I have been contacted by a researcher from France who has done basic research using addicted lab animals. His findings show a significant reduction in alcohol consumption among the experimental group plus a significant improvement in withdrawal symptoms. He has not published because they were intending to patent but my application and paper has interrupted their plans. I am hopeful they will publish their data so I can use it for my grant application to do more human studies. I have also been contacted by a PhD at NIH who does basic science addiction research who has been hired to set up a research program at the University of Iowa. He is planning research on how kavalactones affect addictive behavior. With all this new interest in kava and addictions from reputable scientists I am going to resume my efforts to find an institution who will sponsor my research. Have a great new year, Greg" Skip -- H.C.
