| Welcome to the Kava plant identification forum | |
| yee | Aloha, Think you found the elusive red 'awa? Or need help identifying a variety? This forum may be of use for you. To help start the thread, perhaps you could post the kava plant's tentative name in the Subject field. Here you may post pictures of a kava variety to bring consensus or draw comments as to a kava plant's possible identity. Images would not reside on this server so you need to provide its address. See the FAQ on images for an example. As space permits, for redundancy, and at the moderator's discretion, the image would be downloaded to the Forum's server. In case you have no url (address) for your photo, you may e-mail them to info@hawaiiankava.com or if you have a photograph, please provide a return address and send it to Hawaiian Kava Center, LLC c/o Forum Photo PO Box 26344 Honolulu HI 96825 Or contact us for other arrangements or questions. | awarruda | I have the Red Awa, Awa Kau la'au. My brother and I discovered this lost variety seven years ago, just down the road from where we grew up, in Puna. The large stalks are a deep red with the smaller ones more goldish in color. We called it Pala'ehu until our auntie Haunani told us we had found the Kau la'au. When we had it tested with some wild purple Moi, the kavalactones of the wild Kau la'au were just about twice as strong as the Moi, we were stunned! Anyway I will try to post some pic. soon. A Hui Hou!! Awarruda |
| yee | Aloha awarruda, That is a wonderful discovery. I'd be happy to post the pictures on the server. Let me know how you'd like the caption/credits to read. If you like you could e-mail them to info@hawaiiankava.com or you could mail them and I willl return them to you. If you need assistance in propagation, let me know. On the Big Island, Jerry Konanui and Ed Johnston are in Pahoa & Pepe'ekeo respectively. Both can help out immediately. They're putting together a catalog, but are also expert planters. Kawika Winter and Will McClatchey are also putting together an enthnobotanic study on Hawaiian kava or `awa. Their efforts are helping document what has been known by Hawaiians for centuries. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at your convenience (phone, e-mail). I also go to Kona & Hilo on some weekends/holidays.
