Kava hypertension?
Simian I just read on a conventional medicine site that Kava can cause high blood pressure if you take a lot of it. Is this true? Its just that I have a health anxiety problem and one of my main worries is high blood pressure.
artvandolay From all that I've read, which is considerable though not nearly as much as many on this board, I would say that has no basis in fact.
Simian Ok, thanks. Another question. Is Kava from Vanuatu not very good, as I took rather a lot of it the last couple of nights but all it did was make me feel dopey and slightly sick with a slight headache. I'm going to get some of the Hawaiian stuff soon.
yee There are perhaps five possible causes for the "Vanuatu" experience: 1. Dosage. How much did you take? One could take too much and feel that way. 2. KL profile. Some cultivars have predominantly DHK, DHM, which can cause these symptoms. Would you know the Vanuatu kava cultivar type? Hawaiian kavas are predominantly high in Kavain, and are considered excellent social beverages. 3. Spoilage. Kava that's not dried to less than 12% water content will deteriorate rapidly - it might smell very strongly of turpinetine and moldy. In Hawaii, we all have access to drying facilities and transport is not an issue, so Hawaiian kavas would not have this problem. 4. Methyle bromide. Foreign (not Hawaii) food imports are sometimes treated with this chemical as a fumigant. Our Hawaiian kavas are hygenically processed and do not have to be treated. 5. Filtering. Some Fijians have related to me the importance of removing the fibers, which reputedly, if large, can cause discomfort. Our Hawaiian kavas are pounded, leaving the fine powder, and the fibrous material is largely discarded. Mahalo, Jonathan Hawaiian Kava Center, LLC http://hawaiiankava.com
Simian I did take a lot, but that was because lower amounts didn't do anything. It was Melomelo kava. Which type of kava would be best for making you relaxed, sociable and happy without making you feel tired and ill? Also, are Fijian kavas any good?
Figaro I tried melomelo. For whatever it's worth, I thought it was useless. Didn't make me sick, though, even at 4 tbsp per cup.
yee From the Vanuatu and Fiji, I only tried borogu and kadavu, respectively. At one time, Hale Noa (a kava bar in Honolulu) was serving the borogu. And the kadavu was given to me by a Fijian. These were supposed to be the best ones for drinking from Vanuatu and Fiji. To me the borogu was stronger than the kadavu, but the kadavu was more palatable in being smoother or less harsh, but still effective. I haven't had enough experience with Vanuatu and Fijian kavas but only can cite their good repute from the bar and Fijian friends. Though I have seen instances of unscruplous dealings - a nail in one of the kavas from Fiji, soured kava (kava with too much moisture) in another. Presently my main stay and preferred choice are the Hawaiian kavas, which are excellent for drinking, have consistently high quality control, and offer very pleasant effects. The Hawaiian kavas are ones which I feel everybody can trust, appreciate and offer top value. That is why I feel the most comfortable with our native Hawaiian kava ('awa) crop from start to finish. I don't mean to be self-serving, but I believe that's just how it is.[:)] Mahalo, Jonathan Hawaiian Kava Center, LLC http://hawaiiankava.com
Simian Which of the Hawaiian kavas has the most euphoric affects, without the more unpleasant effects? Moi? Mahakea? and which kava do you think would be best for someone with anxiety disorders and depression? One with good mood enhancing and antianxiety effects without being too sedating and making you feel groggy.
