Rod A Nice Combination I enjoy drinking awa the traditional way, lomi lomi, tanoa, coconut shells and all, with a twist. Simply prepare about 1/2 cup of powder with about 48 oz or so of room temperature spring water. Use a blender / lomi lomi / whatever. Strain well with your favorite filter bag. I prefer 1 gal. paint filter bags from Home Depot. Drink the awa like shots from a coconut shell and chase it with a nice A&W Diet Root beer with ice in a tall glass. Space your shell consumption out at least 5 or 10 minutes apart. The diet root beer has no sugar or caffeine (stimulants to counteract the ava) and the root beer flavor seems to compliment the taste of the ava. Rocket science... No One of life’s simple pleasures... Certainly
Rod I almost forgot... You need to listen to Raiatea Helms' CD "Faraway Heaven" while enjoying your ava[;)] Aloha from California
yee Thank you, Rod. Music & kava make total sense. And that twist of a rootbeer idea is a neat one to suggest. It's not always convenient to find a sugar cane, or a ripe banana lying around. This is yet another opportunity for those challenged by kava, and wishing not to just grin and bear it [:D]... I'm looking forward to listening to Faraway Heaven one day. Certainly enjoying the kava in the most effective way is high culture. [:)] Home Depot is great for their hours, and when you're in a bind for strainers at a late hour. I use those paint strainers, and silk screen ones, too. With the silk screens, say a 20"x20" square, you can look for smaller or larger gauges. I forgot what size is mine, but you could eyeball compare it against the paint strainer, btw, the larger the number the finer the mesh. They aren't cheap, I spent maybe $20 for mine, but they do seem a lot sturdier. Mine is made of nylon, and there are stainless steel ones as well. Mahalo, Jonathan
djsmed I have found this to be tasy and effective. I am still working on the exact quantity... 2 Tblsp Moi Kava (Great stuff!) 1 Tsp Canola or veg oil Pinch of Cinnimin Pinch of Nutmeg 2 cups of HOT water 1 cup soy (or regular) milk Maple Syrup to taste Mix all ingredients except soy milk in a sealable tupperware container or water bottle. Shake for about a min. and let it sit for a few then shake again. Keep doing this for about 30 mins on and off. You could also use a hand mixer or blender for a faster fix. Strain through mesh kitchen strainer or cheesecloth or whatever you fav strainer is. Then add milk and drink. This is actually a nice taste and it sure works well.[8)] -dj- "Live and let Live!"
vanuatu Happy New Year from Vanuatu. If you can get fresh kava, that is the way to make a potent drink. Wash the roots well, the grind up in a mincer (like you use for sausages) then it is the usual place in straining medium, add water, squeeze then drink. You can peel the kava if a not so earthy taste is required. Hot peppermint tea afterwards is nice. Good tip on the paint strainer. Now to find one here! roxanne
rickhard Hi, all. New to the forum and the site. Thought I'd share a recipe or two. Nothing too complex, though. Favorite mixture: 3 tbsp kava powder 2 tbsp lecithen granules 12 oz hot chocolate 2 tbsp extra sugar OK. The hot chocolate is something I get out of the vending machine at work. (Yep, I use kava at work. I'm in sales, go to a ton of meetings, have to talk to customers, etc. All of Kava's effects are good there.) But, anyway, get the cup of hot chocolate, Add the kava, sugar and lecithen, stir, and let cool to a temp that's condusive to slamming it quickly. I don't know how the heat impacts it or not, but it seems like the warmth accelerates it into the system. Also, occasionally, in the evenings, I can drink it straight or with a bit of honey added to sweeten. Mixing in the blender is best for home use, though. -Rick
